THERE was some good news for the peninsula last
night after a senior Donegal County Council source
confirmed that Inishowen’s litter warden has had his
contract extended at the eleventh hour.
Initially given a written finishing date of today,
Friday, the warden’s term of unemployment has been
extended for two months ahead of a probable
permanent position. Labour councillor Martin Farren
warmly welcomed the council u-turn.
“I am absolutely delighted that the warden’s vital
role has been retained. I have a very close working
relationship with Pearse [McGrory] and he works
extremely hard across all of Inishowen. He is a very
valuable asset and all the councillors have worked
away behind the scenes to make sure that he is kept
on,” he said.
The litter warden, who criss-crosses the peninsula
in a van, has implemented a CCTV scheme to crackdown
on illegal dumping here. He also works closely with
local Tidy Towns groups to keep the peninsula
beautiful.
Martin Robins, from Carn Tidy Towns, said he hoped
the position would now be cemented as a permanent
one.
“The litter warden has done a brilliant job so far
and his role in Inishowen is crucial. We need to
ensure that we keep the valuable resources we have.
Pearse has helped us tremendously, doing everything
in his power to assist the Tidy Towns effort,” he
said.
Local Fianna Fail representative and active Buncrana
Tidy Towns volunteer Rena Donaghey was similarly
upbeat.
“I lobbied extremely hard to have the services of
the litter warden retained and I am delighted.
Pearse McGrory has given Inishowen fantastic service
and we really need that to continue. I am confident
that he will now remain in the role on a permanent
basis,” she added. |
