NW tunes up for €3.5m boost

INISHOWEN is tuning up for a share of €3.5m next
summer when the North Atlantic Fiddle Convention
takes place in Ireland for the first time.
Some 400 musicians and 40,000 visitors are expected
to travel to Derry and Co Donegal for the five-day
event which takes place from June 27 to July 1,
2012.
Performers from countries including Ireland,
Scotland, the US, Canada, Denmark and Norway are
scheduled to take part.
They include The Chieftans, The String Sisters
featuring Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh; Liz Carroll from the
US; Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill; Cathal Hayden
and the Wrigley Sisters.
The event has previously been held in Scotland,
Sweden and Canada.
Convention director and fiddle player, Liz Doherty,
said the event is "about cultural exchange,
developing new audiences, forging partnerships". |
"International
musicians and dancers will meet and mingle with
local players and a vibrant and exciting five days
and nights of music and dance is in store," said Ms
Doherty.
The event was launched yesterday in the Great Hall,
Magee Campus of the University of Ulster in Derry
city by The Chieftans frontman, Paddy Moloney.
Programme manager, Tom Sherlock, said visitors could
look forward to a wide variety of concerts, ceilis,
materclasses, session trails, talks and an
international youth fiddle camp. |

"North Atlantic Fiddle
Convention 2012 (NAFCo2012) will attract over 400
artists and performers and more than 1,000 musical
participants and it aims to attract an audience in
excess of 40,000 to its various events over a
five-day period in June. It has been estimated that
NAFCo2012 will generate an economic impact in excess
of Stg £3 million for the North West," said Mr
Sherlock. |
