A STATE-of-the-art new
primary school is set to be constructed on the
grounds of Scoil Iosagain in Buncrana, the Inishowen
Independent has learned.
The news, announced by An Tanaiste Minister Mary
Coughlan yesterday, was warmly welcomed by delighted
county councillor Rena Donaghy.
“Scoil Íosagáin is fortunate to have sufficient
space to locate the proposed new campus. The
construction work will be a great boost to the local
economy. Considerable ground work has already taken
place in the preparation of a substantial proposal
which outlines reasons why the school must be
updated,” she said.
“I co-ordinated a meeting with the Tanaiste and a
delegation form Scoil Íosagáin, when we presented a
strong case in favour of a new school premises for
Scoil Íosagáin.”
Cllr Donaghey and Cllr James Gill met with principal
Sinead McLaughlin before co-ordinating a meeting
between the Tanaiste and a delegation from Scoil
Iosagain. Senator Cecilia Keaveney maintained a link
between the Department of Education and the
Inishowen school.
“It was clear that the existing premises were
inadequate to meet the needs of the current school
population of 690 students, staff of 66 teachers and
special needs assistants,” Cllr. Donaghy said.
Scoil Íosagáin was the first mainstream primary
school in Ireland to open a class for pupils with
severe and profound general learning disability in
1997. The school also offers special classes,
serving the entire peninsula. |
