FATHER O’Gara Cup holder Clonmany Shamrocks Reserves tamely exited this season’s competition with a 3-0 defeat at home to near neighbours Rashenny FC on Sunday morning.
Two first half goals from Shane Collins put First Division side Rashenny on their way, and he completed his hat-trick seven minutes before the end from the penalty spot, albeit on the rebound after Clonmany’s highly rated keeper Kevin McLaughlin had saved Collin’s first effort.
Clonmany rarely troubled Christy Ivers in the Rashenny nets, ironically, Ivers was between the sticks for Clonmany when they beat Cockhill 2-0 in last season’s decider at Maginn. He was one of three players who started last May to feature again on Sunday, albeit with a different team. Aidan Doherty, who found the net against Cockhill in May was the only survivor to start for Clonmany, while Dessie Doherty made a substitute’s appearance.
In truth, this young Clonmany Reserves team was a pale shadow of the experienced side that won the club’s first ever Fr O’Gara cup last May and they played second fiddle to Rashenny for most of the game.
John Grant drew a fine save from Kevin McLaughlin early on and Darren Grant curled a 20 yard shot into Ivers’ hands at the other end. Christy Hands volleyed a Shaun Doherty cross narrowly wide on 21 minutes and at the other end Eamon Doherty had to make a last ditch tackle to stop John Grant getting through on goal.
Rashenny took the lead on 25 minutes. Grant broke down the left and squared the ball to Shane Collins and he tucked the ball inside the left hand post beyond the despairing dive of Kevin McLaughlin.
Clonmany were under the cosh, and only threatened Christy Ivers’ goal from set pieces.
Centre halves Martin Kelly and Liam Diver headed off target from corner kicks before Darren Grant knocked a 30-yard free kick over.
They were punished on 41 minutes when Collins got on the end of a John McLaughlin free kick and sprung Clonmany’s clumsy offside trap to have an easy finish from six yards.
Leading 2-0, Rashenny almost made it 3-0 minutes into the second half when Kevin McLaughlin parried an Anthony Doherty (MJ) free kick and John Grant hit the rebound off the outside of the post.
Clonmany introduced Dessie Doherty and he brought an added bite to the clash, but the tide was still running in Rashenny’s favour. Keeper Kevin McLaughlin made another good save in closing down Collins on 67 minutes before the in-form striker curled a shot right and wide from the left side of the penalty area.
Rashenny won a penalty seven minutes before the end when Donal Kelly slipped a couple of challenges before feeing substitute Damian Friel. Friel was brought down and referee Brian Breslin pointed to the spot.
Emlyn Doherty was Rashenny’s designated penalty taker, but he deferred to Collins and let him take the spot kick. Kevin McLaughlin pulled off a tremendous full length diving save, but Collins was first to react and put the rebound into the net.
