Moville crash out after dismal

Barr) MOVILLE Celtic’s dream of winning a third successive Ulster Junior Cup was well and truly dashed by Glenea United at Glencrow last Sunday afternoon. Expected to secure safe passage to the semi-final, the back-to-back cup champions rarely threatened as the visitors stormed to a deserved 3-1 win on a breezy day by the banks of the Foyle. Goals from Ryan McFadden, Michael Barry and Sean McGuire saw the Donegal League men upset the odds over stunned Moville, who replied with a solitary Tony Boyce strike in the second-half. Missing midfield trio, Graeme Doherty, Richie McElhinney and last year’s cup winner PJ Barr, manager Darren Bredin’s injury woes were further compounded when Shane Canning, Seamus Crumlish and Alan Orr all limped off on a day to forget for the Inishowen men. |

of supporters, who made the long trip Foyleside, Glenea
dominated proceedings with McFadden and McGuire
inspirational in midfield. Ryan Carlin too was a perennial menace, using his strength brilliantly to hold the ball up time and again as Moville defenders struggled to cope. Paul Sweeney and Ciaran McFadden bolstered a United defence which comfortably withstood everything thrown at it on a swirly day at Glencrow Park. And while Tommy McFadden’s Glenea men rode their luck to overcome Inishowen outfit, Aileach in the last round, there was no doubting them last Sunday when they more than proved a match for a Moville team, which last lost an Ulster Junior Cup tie in 2008. Gallagher, who was forced to tip the ball over the bar
for a corner. In the ninth minute Glenea fired the game’s opening goal when Sean McGuire perfectly picked out Ryan McFadden, who clipped the ball past Moville keeper Paul White into the net. Continuing to dominate, the visitors almost fired a second within a minute when Sean McGuire’s cross was fumbled by Moville keeper White. Ryan Carlin and Brian Cuffe combined brilliantly on the edge of the box before Oran McDermot cleared for Moville as Glenea continued to threaten. Midway through the period Moville gained a measure of confidence with Joe Doherty winning a corner before Shane Canning and Doherty released Tony McGeady, whose cross was well gathered by Glenea keeper Gallagher. Moville front man Doherty was in the action moments later, poking a Darryl Doherty throw just wide. On the counter attack, a mazy run by Glenea’s Ryan Carlin needed a good clearing challenge from Tony McGeady before Carlin saw his shot blocked by Seamus Crumlish after an expert pass by Michael Barry. Towards the end of the first half Glenea goalscorer Ryan McFadden almost doubled his team’s advantage but his shot was well saved by Moville keeper Paul White following great work by United duo Sean McGuire and Michael Barry. In a further blow to the cup holders' chances, Moville captain Shane Canning was forced off with a hamstring injury. With the last action of the half, impressive midfielder Sean McGuire fired wide from 12 yards. Moville picked up the pace in the second half and could have equalised within two minutes but Gavin Doherty and Tony McGeady got in each other’s way and failed to convert Joe Doherty’s pinpoint cross. Glenea remained a threat on the break though and front man Michael Barry almost put the visitors two up when firing wide from inside the area. Excellent combination by the two Glenea Ryans - Carlin and McFadden - then saw midfielder Sean McGuire fire just over before Moville got back on terms with fifty five minutes gone; Nigel McMonagle squared for Alan Orr to release Tony Boyce, who made no mistake with a first time dipping shot from eighteen yards. Resurgent Moville continued to press and Boyce almost gave them the lead on the hour mark but his clipped effort was cleared off the line following good work on the left by Nigel McMonagle and Oran McDermot. Glenea weathered the early Moville second half pressure and almost regained the lead when Brian Cuffe glanced Sean McGuire’s free wide. Moments later the Donegal League men were in front when Michael Barry controlled a throw-in on the right before turning and firing an unstoppable shot to the net from 20 yards. Sean McGuire then played a perfect through ball for Ryan Carlin, who raced clear before lifting over from the edge of the area. A constant danger to the Moville defence, Carlin then skipped neatly along the end line before Moville defender Tony McGeady cleared the danger. Reverting to three in attack, Moville almost levelled with 15 minutes remaining when Nigel McMonagle turned in Sean Doherty’s shot, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Another McMonagle effort was ruled out for offside before Glenea struck for a decisive goal with less than 5 minutes to go. Man of the match Sean McGuire took full advantage of a defensive mix-up to race clear before side-footing his effort past Paul White in the home goal. The Donegal League men could have put even more gloss on a remarkable day but Ryan Carlin was denied by the post after being picked out by Ryan McFadden in injury time. Glenea look forward to a semi-final date next month while Moville are left to wonder how they surrendered their grip on the cup so easily.
