Moville girls on a roll 07.04.11

U14s reach All-Ireland final two weeks after U16s win theirs

Moville Community College’s stunning season continues with the school’s U14 girls qualifying for another FAI Schools national final after a 6-0 demolition of Davitt College, Castlebar in Ballyshannon on Tuesday.
The squad, which features 11 of the players who were on the victorious school squad which defeated Dublin’s Alexandra College 4-2 in the All-Ireland U16 final in Finn Park a fortnight ago, is high on confidence.
Moville won the minor title last year, and several of this year’s squad are now aiming for their third All-Ireland medal.
“It’s been an incredible year for the school,” coach and teacher Sally Anne McFadden said. “But when you’ve got a chance to win a national title you have to grab it.
“This is a very talented squad, and as defending champions they’ve been determined to retain their crown.”
Roma McLaughlin and Sarah Jane McDonald hit successive hat tricks for Moville who led 2-0 at half-time. McLaughlin got two in the first half and although Castlebar had a decent spell early in the second half Roma’s third sent the Moville girls on the road to victory.
The Foylesiders made it 4-0 through Sarah Jane McDonald and were very comfortable in the closing stages as McDonald found the net twice more.
Eimear Lafferty, who will play with the Republic of Ireland’s U15s next week, and Stacey Doherty controlled midfield for Moville, with the centre half pairing of Leanne Boyce and team captain Cathy McLaughlin rebuffing any attacks Castlebar managed to mount.
“Our victory over Castlebar was ultimately very comfortable but I was impressed with the attitude of the girls after the full time whistle,” McFadden continued. “There was no major celebrations and that’s a good sign, because winning a semi-final is only a means to an end.”
Moville CC will play either St Angela’s Convent Waterford or Alexandra College (again!) in the final. Those teams meet this afternoon (Thursday) and the final is scheduled for Wednesday 4 May.
Meanwhile, Crana College will provide the opposition to Moville in the Ulster U13 girls final. The game will be played tomorrow, Friday, at Aileach FC’s Lakeside grounds.
