Jackie Crossan Premier Division

Carrowmena...1

Aileach...2

THE sunny surroundings of The Warren saw Aileach increase their chances of finishing the top three of the Premier Division after a hard fought 2-1 victory over Carrowmena last Sunday afternoon.
With everything to play for the penultimate game of the season, two early goals from Anthony Doherty and Gary Collett, made Brian Bell’s favourites to take three points early on, but a second half comeback and a Carrowmena goal from Paul Duffy ensured nervous final moments for the travelling team.
Raymond Dougal’s halftime team talk ensured the Tremone men were not going to give up without a fight, as the “Mena” threw everything they had at Aileach, but in the end their strong defence and quick attacking forward line proved too much for the home side.
Aileach started as the meant to go on with Dermot Doherty, Jimmy Gallagher, Gary Collett and Anthony Doherty immediately identifying themselves as the ones to watch as they linked up together causing problems for the Carrowmena defence.
The inevitable breakthrough came on the twentieth minute when Aileach’s Anthony Doherty was pulled down by John McGeady
in the Carrowmena defence leaving referee, Terence Moyne, no choice but to point to the shot. Doherty then expertly tucked away the resulting penalty low to Michael Noone’s right hand side.
The visitors doubled their led just four minutes later, when Gary Collett maximised on a mistake by the Carrowmena defence and confidently tucked away number two to the right of Noone.
Two down within the first half an hour, Carrowmena came close to making a comeback on the 38th minute when as corner taken by Dermott Harkin caused a goal line scramble before the experienced Aileach defence cleared the danger.
Aileach were quick to respond again with both Anthony and Dermot Doherty linking up together to put Noone under further pressure in goals. On the forty-fourth minute a long ball forward gave Doherty (Dermot) a chance to show his skill when he perfectly took the ball down from the air and shot hard at the Carrowmena goal. Noone responded by punching it clear before birthday boy McGeady scrambled the ball out of harms way.
The second half saw a different Carrowmena side than what went in Paul McGowan, Paul Hyndman and Paul Duffy upping their game in a bid to get something out of the vital game, with midfielders James Gillen, Raymond Campbell and Ryan Killen providing the support in the middle of the pitch.
In the 64th minute a spilled Carrowmena corner fell to Hyndman who hit the shot well from distance, but Gerard Crossan in the Aileach goal held the ball well. With the sense things were changing for the Tremone men, Harkin hit the perfect pass to Duffy who expertly passed the defence and easily slotted the ball into the back of the net.
Determined not to rest, Carrowmena held the pressure on and Gillen’s long ball to the sub Shaun McGrenaghan resulted in the young striker stumbling at the Aileach defence. With penalty claims being shouted from the sidelines, the referee thought different and booked McGrenaghan for diving.
With frustrations running high on both sides, words were had between the Aileach’s Jimmy Gallagher and Carrowmena’s assistant manager John McLaughlin over a throw-in, further instilling the importance of this penultimate match in the Premier League.
Try as they might, Carrowmena were unable to hold the striking force of Brian Bell’s men, whose composure and skill up front was only contained by the heroic goalkeeping of Michael Noone, without whom Carrowmena would have suffered much more greatly.
Man of the match goes to Aileach’s number 9 Anthony Doherty. The centre forward was involved in most of the away side’s chances by both setting up the Doherty and Collett as well as scoring an impressive penalty to get Aileach of the mark.
