DONEGAL manager Jim
McGuinness has defended his team’s tactics ahead of
Sunday’s clash with Antrim at Ballybofey.
Despite guiding his side to the Allianz Football
League Division 2 title at the end of last month,
Donegal’s style of football came in for some heavy
criticism from Antrim boss Liam Bradley, who
labelled Donegal as “ultra-defensive and playing
real puke football”.
Antrim, who play such a wonderful brand of football
that they were relegated from Division 2 and managed
only a single win in their seven games – pass the
bucket.
Their 2009 flash in the pan season is but a distant
memory now.
McGuinness speculated that his counterpart was
attempting to play “mind games” ahead of the hugely
anticipated preliminary round game.
“Everybody is entitled to their opinion. I don’t
know if it is mind games or what he is trying to
achieve with it,” McGuinness said.
“From our perspective we would be very happy that we
finished the League on top of the division and the
highest scoring average in the division. We won the
League and from our perspective we wouldn’t consider
that ultra-defensive.
“I would feel that to end up at the top of the pile
at the end of the League you need to be doing
something right offensively and I hope that the good
work that we have done through the League can be
replicated on Sunday.
“If somebody wants to brand it ultra-defensive and
we can rack up some of the scores that we did
throughout the League, then we will be happy enough
to take that.” (Inishowen
