Burt and Antrim to meet again

Burt...0-10 Creggan Kickhams (Antrim)...0-10 BURT and Creggan Kickhams must meet again to decide the destination of the Ulster Junior Hurling Championship title after the sides played out a low scoring draw in Clones. Burt led the Antrim champions by 0-6 to 0-2 at half time after an eventful first half that saw both teams reduced to 14 men: Burt’s Enda McDermott and Creggan’s Sam Maguire both were issued with second yellow cards in the final ten minutes of the second half. Burt had to withstand a second half onslaught from Creggan, led by Antrim senior county player Conor McCann. McCann hit six second half points and his side took the lead for the first and only time two minutes from full time. But Niall Campbell, who top scored for Burt with six points, won and converted a 62nd minute free that drew his side level. He had a late chance to steal a victory for Burt, but with the last poc of the game he slid a difficult free from near the sideline narrowly wide. The replay will be on Sunday week, 20 November. In between times, Burt will play Cremartin in the Ulster Junior Football semi final and with County Committee refusing to extend the playing season beyond the 30 November deadline, the club’s five outstanding Division 3 football games will not be completed in 2011. Niall Campbell opened his account with an early 65 and Ronan McDermott doubled Burt’s tally with a fine 45m effort in the fifth minute. Creggan drew level by the eighth minute through Conor McCann and Martin Johnston. Two further Campbell frees had Burt 0-4 to 0-2 ahead by the 20th minute when Enda McDermott was issued with a second yellow card and sent to the line. Burt added point from Campbell and Jonathan McGrath before Creggan found themselves down to 14 men when the magnificently named midfielder Sam Maguire picked up his second yellow just before half time. Trailing by 0-2 to 0-6, the Antrim side upped their game in the second half, pointing within 10 seconds of the restart through Aidan McKeown and Conor McCann making it a two point game by the 34th minute. Ronan McDermott flashed a shot over the bar when a goal looked on and Mickey McCann restored Burt’s four point advantage by the 40th minute, but it was all Creggan after that as they hit six of the next seven points. Full forward Conor McCann hit five points and Aidan McKeown one with Burt’s solitary reply a 50th minute Niall Campbell free. McCann put Creggan ahead in the 58th minute, but that injury time Niall Campbell point ensured that the teams will meet again on Sunday week. |

Christy McDermott and Conor McLaughlin showed well in flashes, Niall Campbell was accurate from frees, in defence, Joe Boyle did well but Ronan McDermott gets the nod for his energetic display that saw him get on the scoresheet twice from his midfield berth. Tactical take Mindful of the threat of Antrim intercounty hurler Thomas McCann, Burt deployed Mickey McCann as a sweeper between the full back and half back lines to cut out supply to the full forward and this was successful in the first half. Thomas McCann was left isolated inside the 45 after the break, but Joe Boyle handled him well. However, the move of McCann out to centre field, swung the game in Creggan’s favour with their half backs and midfielders winning most Burt puck outs and dominating possession. Burt were over dependent on Niall Campbell’s free taking for their scores. Man-in-the-middle Referee James Clarke drew the ire of both sets of supporters for sending two men off, but with both men already on yellow they should have been more careful in the challenge and neither could have much complaint for their second yellows at least. While a wee bit fussy in the first half, the referee improved after the break and was much better in the second half. What’s next? Both sides will be busy before the replay on Sunday week. Burt play Cremartin from Monaghan in the Ulster football semi final on Sunday, while Creggan will contest the Antrim U21 football final tonight.
