THE search for a
missing Derry teenager feared drowned in Lough
Swilly will resume in the morning after being
hampered today by strong winds and stormy seas. Sean
McNair, 17, disappeared after entering the water at
Rathmullan pier around 1.30am on Saturday following
an 18th birthday party. It is understood the youths
were swimming at the time. Lough Swilly inshore RNLI
lifeboat was launched from Ned's Point at 1.40am to
assist in the search of the waters around Rathmullan.
The search, co-ordinated by Malin Head Coast Guard,
was expanded to include the waters around Fahan and
Lisfannon. Lough Swilly RNLI spokesperson, Joe Joyce
said: "The inshore kifeboat proceeded to the area
and co-ordinated a search with a local vessel and
were later joined by the Lough Swilly all-weather
lifeboat." The Coast Guard helicopter and Mulroy
Coast Guard were also tasked in a bid to find the
youth, from the Creggan area of Derry. Using white
illuminating para-flares the boats searched the area
to the north and south of the pier but to no avail.
Volunteer divers from the local sub-aqua clubs also
joined Garda divers for the search. "The search is
continuing while friends and family of the missing
teenager are maintaining a vigil at Rathmullan
Pier," added Mr Joyce. |
