A TIME capsule is set to capture a unique snapshot
of life in Malin Head in 2011 before being buried
beneath the local community hall for future
generations to uncover.
With works ongoing at the local hall, it is expected
that the capsule will be embedded four feet below
the floor following a gala ceremony likely to be
held in June.
An open day will take place in the hall on Sunday,
April 17 next, when locals are invited to come
forward with suggestions or items to be included for
burial in the time capsule.
A member of the Malin Head Community Association
Fundraising committee member came up with the idea
after uncovering a similar capsule in Dublin almost
two decades ago.
“I was working at a site in Dublin when we unearthed
a time capsule about 16 years ago. The committee
then thought this would be a good way to celebrate
the local community with works nearly completed on
the hall,” Eamonn Ward said.
Members of the public are particularly urged to
donate family photos and write letters to the
future.
A secret chamber will be constructed so that the
capsule may be accessed by generations in years to
come.
Eamonn said that the Community Association may opt
to unearth it in twenty years time to see how people
have changed.
“Some people will have passed away but other new
arrivals in the area will be able to find out more
about those who came before them,” Eamonn said.
The capsule itself is likely to be an empty aluminum
beer barrel, which will be filled up with various
items from the locality.
Any person wishing to include items can make
arrangements courtesy of any Malin Head committee
member or contact Eamonn on 0872876033. |
