University red-faced after
spelling error

THE National University of Ireland (NUI) has been
left red-faced due to a spelling error on 100,000
ballot papers for the forthcoming Seanad elections.
The typographical error occurs on the back of the
ballot paper where the letter 's' is missing from
the body’s name and is incorrectly printed as
'National Univerity of Ireland'. |

Ireland registrar, Dr Attracta Halpin, yesterday
said the mistake was "very much" regretted but she
stressed that it did not invalidate the election
process. She said once the general election was
called, the process thereafter "happened very
quickly".
"The ballot papers were produced under pressure of
time. The typographical error was missed and we
regret it very much. The error has no consequence in
terms of the validity of the ballot paper," said Dr
Halpin. She said there were 'at least' two people
tasked with proof-reading the draft ballot paper
before it went to print.
The NUI constituency comprises just under 100,000
graduate voters including hundreds in Co Donegal,
who were recently sent their ballot papers by
registered post.
Meanwhile, Dr Halpin urged anyone who changed
address and did not receive their ballot paper to
complete a register update form that can be
downloaded from the organisation's website
www.nui.ie .
There are 27 candidates - 23 men and four women -
running for election in the NUI constituency. They
include consultant doctor and cancer specialist,
John Crown, former supermarket boss, Feargal Quinn
and pensions campaigner and teacher, Bernadine
O'Sullivan. The poll closes on Wednesday, April 27,
2011 at 11am. |
