Council to privatise recycling
depots

DONEGAL County Council
has signalled its intention to continue with the
scheme to privatise civic amenity sites in the
county.
The council has indicated that it is still looking
for a contractor to take over the running of three
sites in the county including the one at Carndonagh.
The Inishowen Independent understand that a number
contractors have examined the Carn site, but no
contracts have yet been agreed.
Fianna Fáil councillor Rena Donaghey said that the
proposal was still in its early stage.
She said: “This proposal has been put forward but
has not been discussed at an Inishowen Electoral
Area meeting, nor has it been debated by full
council.
“Council officers have assured us that this scheme
would result in the service being cheaper for
customers.” |

Councillor Donaghey was
asked about concerns that once privatisation took
place that the prices would increase and said that
she was aware of these concerns.
She said: “This is something that I am aware of and
something that has been discussed.
“Again we have been told that this will result in
lower prices and hopefully this will be the case.”
Cllr John Ryan gave a guarded welcome to the
proposal to contract out services at the Carn
Recycling centre.
“There have been concerns about value for money and
restricted opening hours at sites like Carn,” Cllr
Ryan said. “The council is seeking private
contractors, and if they can provide a better value
service and offer longer opening hours then I’d
support it.”
The Carndonagh Civic Amenity Site is open from
8.30am-4.30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Cllr Ryan said that the cost of using the services
at the site have been at issue and may have
contributed to the problem of illegal dumping.
However, with the Inishowen litter warden based at
the amenity site three days a week, a private
contractor taking over operations there would free
the warden to concentrate of dealing with issues
elsewhere.
“The litter warden has been a great addition to the
council over recent years,” Cllr Ryan said. “And
this should free him up to be out and about even
more throughout Inishowen.” (Inishowen
