Mum of four suffers
suspected heart attack on treadmill
by Linda McGrory
A MOTHER of four died yesterday as she worked out in
the gym.
Angela Grogan (60) took ill while running on a
treadmill at The Gym, Carndonagh, at about 9.30am.
Daughter Michelle (30) was using a treadmill
alongside, when her mother suffered a suspected
massive heart attack and died in front of her.
"She was walking on the treadmill at first and then
she was running and then it happened," said
heartbroken Michelle.
The family, from Glengad Mountain, Malin, yesterday
paid tribute to their mother. |
"She was so generous,
selfless, kind and considerate," said Michelle. Son
Jason (36) said: "Everybody loved her. She just
lived for other people." Husband Michael (58) said:
"She was the best."
Ms Grogan and English-born Michael moved to her
native Glengad with their family from Lancashire in
1996. The couple's other children are Clare (27) and
Laura (25) and they have a grandson Riley (5). Ms
Grogan recently retired from her job at the local
post office and was enjoying her hobbies of keep
fit, knitting, sewing and handicrafts. Her shocked
family, several wearing scarves she had knit them,
say they had no warning.
"Mum loved walking and keeping fit and she didn't
complain of any chest pains or anything," said
Michelle. |

suspected heart attack while running on a treadmill
in The Gym, Carndonagh. |
"We joined The Gym
together last September and went about five times a
week. She even did a Zumba class the day before,"
she added.
The independently-run gym at Mart Road, Carndonagh,
is just yards from the local Garda station and
officers were on the scene quickly.
Attempts by paramedics to resuscitate Ms Grogan were
unsuccessful.
Superintendent Kevin English of Buncrana Garda
Station said gardaí are not treating the death as
suspicious.
"It appears the woman was exercising when
unfortunately she took ill. She was pronounced dead
at the scene.
"The coroner was notified and the woman's body was
removed to Letterkenny General Hospital for a post
mortem examination.”
Devastated gym owner, Peter Doherty, declined to be
interviewed yesterday. |

The late mum of four, Angela Grogan,
was a member of The Gym at Mart Road, pictured,
since September. |
His gym has been in
operation for eight years and its motto is "No more
excuses". A sign on the door yesterday said the
premises would be closed until further notice.
The Grogan family paid tribute to Mr Doherty and the
paramedics. "The paramedics and Peter were
brilliant. They did everything they could to help
her but there was nothing they could do. We've been
told it was a one-in-a-thousand thing. Everybody did
their best," said Jason.
Local TD., Deputy Charlie McConalogue said the
community was shocked by the death. “This is a real
tragedy for the family and the thoughts and
sympathies of the whole community go out to them,”
he said. |
