Surprise Donegal Catch for sick kids! 23.12.12

SICK children have netted a whopping 12,500 euro Christmas present thanks to a veteran Inishowen fisherman.
Trawlerman and singer-songwriter, Michael Cavanagh from Greencastle, donated the money to Our Lady's Hospital in Crumlin after his music DVD 'My Work and My Music' was a sell-out at home and overseas.
He sold nearly 800 copies of the charity disc in the last year at home in Donegal and in the Faroe Islands where he lands thousands of tonnes of fish every year.
"A lot of the money was raised thanks to the generosity of people in Donegal but I raised about €5,000 in the Faroes and about €1,000 each in Denmark and Norway," said the father of five.
Michael Cavanagh receives a presentation from Crumlin head of fundraising Gerry Cully.
The 63-year old skipper employs a crew of eleven on his Killybegs-based trawler 'Fr McKee'.
He fishes for mackerel, herring and tuna but has also been landing boarfish for the industrial sector in the Faroes for the last 16 years.
Veteran Donegal fisherman and songwriter, Michael Cavanagh, whose latest tuna-ful disc has raised a whopping 12,500 euro for Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin.
His charity musical efforts in the last four years have raised more than €35,000 for good causes including the Coast Guard and RNLI.
'My Work and My Music' includes seafaring footage as well as Michael's own folk compositions and contributions from a Faroe Islands gospel choir made up of sailors and fishermen.
The big-hearted granddad was delighted to give the proceeds to the children's hospital not least because two of his grand-nieces were previously treated there.
"When you see the work they do at the hospital and you see what the children go through because of their illnesses, it's good to know that the money will be put to good use," he said.
