Seminar to explore heritage in Donegal towns 20.03.12

DONEGAL County Council is to explore how Tidy Towns committees and other community groups can help protect and enhance the natural and built heritage of their towns and villages.
The local authority, in association with the The Heritage Council, is hosting a free public seminar entitled 'Heritage in Tidy Towns' later this month. The half-day conference will raise awareness about cultural heritage and how beautiful old shop fronts, churches and other structures including traditional phone boxes can contribute to the overall character of a town or village.
Donegal heritage officer, Joseph Gallagher, said the "civic pride" demonstrated by Tidy Towns committees can do much to conserve the heritage of a town or village.
"The heritage of a town or village contributes significantly to its character and appearance. It reinforces our sense of place and reflects our sense of identity,” said Mr Gallagher.
“Our heritage contributes to the attractiveness of the towns and villages in which we live, work and visit, and to the ability of communities to attract visitors and tourists.
"The built environment of our streetscapes is constantly changing and aspects of our heritage and village character can be lost in the process," added Mr Gallagher.

Co Donegal has enjoyed considerable success in the Tidy Towns competition over the years with Glenties and Malin Town having won seven overall titles between them.
The seminar which is part of the County Donegal Heritage Plan, will be opened by Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht, Dinny McGinley T.D. Guest speakers will include national Tidy Towns adjudicators, Sharon Eastwood and Debbie Nesbitt and Heritage Council architecture officer, Colm Murray. The seminar will take place in Letterkenny's Regional Cultural Centre on Saturday, March 24 from 9am to 1pm.
