DJ Michelle swaps headphones for
hard hat
01.10.12
MICHELLE Doherty will
swap the headphones for a hard hat when she launches
a project to help men affected by the collapse of
the construction sector.
The award-winning DJ, model and actress, will
officially open the Men's Shed Workshop in
Carndonagh this Friday.
Men's Shed is a global initiative designed to bring
men together in a communal version of the shed in
the back yard. It is aimed at tackling social
isolation by allowing men of all ages to socialise
and swap skills.
Model and actress Michelle said she was glad to
support the local project.
"I see the Men's Shed Carndonagh project as a really
worthwhile initiative for men from this area
who have been affected by the downturn.
"It promises to help instill and reinvigorate the
sense of community spirit that was prevalent in
Ireland in times gone by and, recession or no
recession, I hope this project is going to be a huge
success for many many more years to come," said the
Glengad girl.
Men's Shed treasurer in Carndonagh, Gerard McCarron,
said Michelle's support was a big boost.
“It’s great that Michelle is taking time out of her
hectic schedule to support the Men's Shed Carn
project. |
I would also like to
say a big thank you to the Henry Girls and Liam
McDermott who will be providing the music
afterwards.
“Over the past six months, through various
fundraising activities and the generous support of
the local community, more than €5000 has been
raised.
"As well as supporting renovation works at the Men's
Shed Carn premises, these proceeds will be shared
with a number of other worthwhile causes including
The Funny Feet Fund, Carndonagh and Our Lady’s
Children’s Hospital, Crumlim." Representatives of
both charities will receive cheques for
approximately €1700 each on the night. |

The project was set up
in the old Co-Op, Malin Road, in February to address
issues faced by men in Inishowen who lost their jobs
when the building industry went belly up.
Many local men earned their living during the boom
as plasterers, carpenters and block layers.
The project is supported by Inishowen Development
Partnership. Its spokesperson, Denise McCool, said
it gave local men an opportunity to use and share
their skills and talents.
"You could see anything from men making garden
furniture to restoring an old piece of furniture or
maybe fixing lawn mowers.
"We hope this initiative will help bring together
men of all ages to share their stories, skills and
knowledge and make a positive contribution to the
local community," said Ms McCool.
The launch will take place at 7pm in the workshop
followed by entertainment upstairs in Tul Na Ri. |
