Ritchie to lift lid on autism 28.05.12

THE producers of drama written by a young man with Asperger's syndrome are keen for Inishowen families affected by autism to see his play.
'Isolated People' was written by Ritchie Collins Moore from Derry and is directed by Marion Kenny.
The play hopes to raise awareness of autistic spectrum disorder through the medium of drama.
Geraldine McGaughey who has worked extensively in the field of autistic spectrum disorder said the play would have resonance with families affected by autism in the peninsula.
"Ritchie and I are very keen to let as many people know in Inishowen about the drama. I have worked in the field of autistic spectrum disorder for over seven years and to date this is the first play I have come across that looks at this disorder," she said. Ms McGaughey described the condition as "a hidden disability" that not only affects the individual with autism but can also "isolate the whole family".
'Isolated People' follows autistic teenager, James, as he struggles to find his sense of belonging in society.

"He is bullied at school and doesn’t fit in. His mum Christina, struggles financially while his philanderer father is usually away on business. Christina's best friend, Kate, the next-door neighbour, is not always a good influence on the family. James has to become a man," says the promotional blurb.
The play will be staged at the Millennium Forum, Derry, on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 8pm. Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12.
