Inishowen tees up for Open boost 17.01.12

by Eamonn Mac Dermott, Inishowen Independent

THE Irish Open Golf Championship at Portrush this June will be a ‘massive boost’ for Inishowen, according to the peninsula's tourism body.
With Major winners Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Pádraig Harrington all expected to play, tens of thousands of golf fans from Ireland and further afield are expected to attend the tournament.

Golf purists often talk about playing the ‘big three’ in this part of the world and that is Portrush, Portstewart and Ballyliffin," said Inishowen Tourism manager, Kathleen Gill.
“So we expect that those coming for the Open will want to play at Ballyliffin and this of course is great news for this part of the world.
“There have always been good relations between the three clubs. We are gearing up for an influx of golfers and golfing fans in the days and weeks around the Open and we would expect that Ballyliffin and possibly other courses in the area will be busy.
“We are lucky in that we have a good accommodation base here and will be able to put everyone up who wants to stay.” She said the local infrastructure was "vitally important".
“Of course the Greencastle to Magilligan ferry is going to be vital to tourism during the Open. The ferry makes this whole region accessible and we would expect it to be busy during the golf.
“This news is great for the region and we are looking forward to golfers coming here and seeing for themselves what great courses are here.”
