SANTASTIC! 18.12.12

A Greencastle woman has put her Santastic collection of Father Christmases on display to raise money for sick children.
Jean Hegarty is putting a ho, ho, whole lot of fun into Christmas after putting her huge collection - numbering nearly 2,000 Santas - on display for the first time.
Jean (64) has been gathering Santas since she married Hugo 44 years ago.
“I started the collection because I just like Santa,” said the mother of two.
“They come in all shapes and sizes and I have about six favourites including the very first one I got in 1968 – it’s a small, old fashioned tree ornament.”

The Derry-born museum worker has now amassed an amazing collection including short Santas, fat Santas, tall ones and cuddly ones. They include Santas in the shape of pens, socks and hats. Cardboard Santas, wooden Santas, plastic Santas and furry Santas are also included in the festive fun.
Grand-mum of four Jean always bedecks her home for the amusement of family and friends at Christmas but last Sunday was the first time she displayed them for the general public to enjoy. And it was all done for a good Claus.
She managed to raise 638 euro for the LauraLynn Foundation. The foundation runs a hospice for children with life-limiting conditions and gives their families much-needed support and respite.
Jean was so thrilled with the response to her very first open day she is already making plans for 'Santa Sunday 2013'.
