TWO young sailors from
sailing clubs in the Foyle have secured trips on a
ship taking part in the upcoming Tallships Race in
the Irish Sea.
The opportunity arose through the Loughs Agency and
Ocean Youth Trust Ireland’s associations with Lough
Foyle Yacht Club, Culmore, and Moville Boat Club in
promoting sailing and sail training on Lough Foyle.
Moville Boat Club’s Catriona Cavanagh, a 21 year old
speech therapy student at Newcastle University, and
LFYC’s Harry Hutton, a 19 year old engineering
student at Glasgow University, will be joining the
45 metre, three-masted TS 'Pelican' of London on the
Dublin to Belfast legs.
They will join the ship in Dublin on August 23 and
sail on the legs from Dublin to Liverpool and from
Liverpool to Belfast. It will be a 10-day trip which
will give them sailing experience and the
opportunity to take part in the onshore activities
in the three ports.
The Loughs Agency has been running sailing courses
on Lough Foyle in conjunction with Ocean Youth Club
Ireland for the last two years and offers RYA
recognised sail training courses from basic dinghy
level up to keelboat class. Details are available on
