Noonan's 'good cop, bad cop'

THE Campaign Against
Household and Water Taxes has claimed the Government
is involved in a pre-Budget "good cop, bad cop"
routine with the Irish people.
CAHWT urged people not to fall for Finance Minister,
Michael Noonan's bold pledge not to take the IMF's
advice on imposing a higher rate of property tax.
"Clearly, Minister Noonan is trying to present
himself as 'good cop' protecting us from the 'bad
cop' IMF who want to wallop us with 0.5% house value
property tax," said Cllr Ruth Coppinger.
"The reality is the troika and government want to
take us to combined water and property tax bills
averaging €1,000 plus per year. Pitching the
property tax initially at 0.25% or 0.5% before
hiking it further is a matter of tactics," she said.
"The non payment of the €100 household tax for many
was a matter of inability to pay. Thousands more
will now find themselves being criminalised for
being poor, low income or trapped in debt with what
is down the line.
"The fact the proposed introduction of the property
tax has been postponed by six months is testament to
the achievements of the CAHWT. Our campaign will
grow in strength in the coming months in response to
government threats. As the Government in concert
with the troika advance their plans for unfair
taxation, the realisation will grow that we have no
alternative but to fight back," she added. |
