HUNDREDS of Alcoholics
Anonymous members will travel to Ireland next month
for the 57th All-Ireland convention of the
fellowship.
The AA convention, for people trying to stay sober,
will be held in Limerick from April 10 -13 under the
theme: 'There is a Solution'.
AA members from throughout Ireland, Europe and the
US are expected to travel for the first All-Ireland
convention in Limerick for 36 years.
There will also be an open meeting on the final
afternoon for the general public and workers who
come into contact with people struggling with
alcohol such as gardaí and healthcare professionals.
"The purpose of the convention is to carry the AA
message of recovery to alcoholics who are members
and to those who may consider themselves having a
problem with alcohol," said a spokesperson.
"It also gives members of the fellowship an
opportunity to share their combined experiences, to
renew old acquaintances and to make new ones."
"Alcoholics Anonymous would like to emphasise its
message of hope and recovery and would suggest that
the unhappiest person in the world is the alcoholic
who has an insistent yearning to enjoy life as he or
she once knew it, but cannot picture life without
alcohol."
The first public AA meeting in Ireland was held in
Dublin in 1946, spreading to Limerick two years
later. Meetings can now be found in every county.
There are no fees or dues to join the AA and the
only requirement for membership is a desire to stop
