Amnesty for guilty Donegal library members 27.02.14

GUILTY readers who have overdue library books lurking in their cupboards and attics are being given an amnesty to return them.
Libraries in Co Donegal are urging members to turn over a new leaf and return overdue items during the month of March without having to pay fines.
So if you're tied up in knots over that overdue 'Fifty Shades of Grey' or your tardiness could feature in the copy of 'Guinness World Records' you borrowed in 1995, fear not.
You could even win a prize for best excuse as to why you didn't return that borrowed book, CD or DVD.
It is Donegal County Council's first county-wide amnesty at its 13 libraries. It hopes the initiative will encourage absent-minded borrowers back into their local libraries.
"We hope by waiving fines, it will encourage readers who feel embarrassed by their oversight to rediscover the pleasures in their local library which include free access to books, online resources and weekly activities," said a spokesperson.
Library borrowers enjoy a borrowing period of three weeks with an extension where requested. Overdue items incur fines of 50 cent per item per week which accrue on members' accounts.
Some 19 million books and other items were borrowed from Irish libraries in 2012.
Children's books accounted for nearly half of all borrowed, the local government figures show.
American novel 'The Help' was the most borrowed book of adult fiction here in 2012 followed by John Grisham's legal thriller 'The Litigators'.
'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' topped the children's most borrowed list.
To celebrate fines amnesty month Donegal libraries are holding a competition for the ‘best excuse’ for a late book!
