Schools should not be used as polling stations 14.05.14

A LOCAL election candidate has called for a review of the use of primary schools as polling stations.
The Fianna Fáil hopeful and mother-of-five said she "fundamentally disagrees" with schools being used during elections.
“As a working mother, I have first-hand experience of the difficulty schools closing for election day can pose for parents.
"It is costly to organise childcare and in many cases, one parent has to take a day’s leave which is not cost-effective for families.
"Across Inishowen, families are struggling and although polling days do not come around too often, it does cause an unnecessary difficulty and expense.
"I believe that the use of community centres, public halls and council offices should be explored as possible alternatives to schools in the future.”
Mary McCauley.
The Foyle candidate has asked party colleague Charlie McConalogue TD to raise the issue with the Ministers for Education and Local Government in a bid to explore appropriate alternatives.
