Doctors prescribe nature walks 20.02.14

WALKS in the fresh air prescribed by GPs have led to reduced blood pressure, weight loss and less medication among overweight patients, according to the preliminary results of a pilot HSE programme. The Green Prescription Programme in Co Donegal has also led to improvements in mental health, better sleep and less social isolation among participants. The project is the first of its kind in Ireland and involves GPs or health professional's referring patients to free, guided community walks. It was developed by the HSE in partnership with local doctors, Get Ireland Active, the Irish Heart Foundation, the Donegal Road Safety Working Group and Donegal Sports Partnership.
"The Green Prescription is based on the idea that physical activity in nature results in positive outcomes for both physical and mental health," said a spokesperson.
The full findings of the initial evaluation of the project will be launched next week in Letterkenny by the HSE's national lead on obesity, Dr Nazih Eldin.
