€25m turbo boost from Donegal
International Rally
17.06.15
MORE than 70,000
spectators are expected to attend the Joule Donegal
International Rally this weekend bringing a €25m
economic boost to the county.
Ireland's biggest motorsport event will see crews
from all over Ireland and beyond descend on the
county for the country's only three-day rally.
The Donegal Road Safety Working Group has also used
the opportunity of the event to urge motorists to
'slow down'.
Heading away the capacity entry are last year's
winners and reigning Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish
Tarmac Champions, Declan and Brian Boyle.
The cousins became only the second all-Donegal crew
to win the rally last year in their all-conquering
Subaru. "However they will be defending their title
this year in a new car. The pair will start the
event in a brand new 2015 specification Ford Fiesta
World Rally Car, the first of its kind seen outside
the World Rally Championship," explained Motorsport Ireland
spokesman Richard Burke. |

cousins Declan and Brian Boyle, will defend their
title this weekend in their all-new Ford Fiesta
World Rally Car. |
Current Irish Tarmac
Championship leader Donagh Kelly starts at number 2
in his Ford Focus rally car. "The Donegal driver
arrives to his home event in superb form having
either won or taken maximum points from every rally
he has entered this year," added Mr Burke.
At number 3 is 2012 Donegal winner, Garry Jennings
from Fermanagh. Belfast driver Derek McGarrity is a
veteran Donegal campaigner and will start at number
4 with Cork driver Daragh O'Riordan starting at 5.
The rally begins this Friday afternoon with six
stages based between Letterkenny and Stranorlar.
Saturday sees eight tests including the daunting
Knockalla stage while Sunday concludes the rally
with two runs over three Donegal classics, High
Glen, Fanad Head and Atlantic Drive.
Meanwhile, the Donegal Road Safety Working Group
said in a statement: "Our appeal to the public is to
take their time on the roads and do everything they
can to increase their safety as well as others, no
matter how long or short the journey is and do not
to attempt to replicate what they see during the
race." |
