Malin 0-14
Naomh Colmcille 1-09
Malin continued the preparations for the new season
with another victory in the Tom Farren Memorial Cup
played in a bitterly cold but dry Connolly Park on
Saturday evening. Jason Doherty had Malin ahead from
the off when he turned sharply before slotting over
from 30 yards. Paul Friel from Naomh Colmcille had
the earliest of early baths when he was black carded
on two minutes. Daniel Clarke got on the scoresheet
for the vistors with a free from a tight angle
before Jason Doherty drilled over the bar for Malin.
Stephen Gallagher goaled on seven minutes for the
men from Newtown after his rasping shot was saved
but managed to trickle towards the line where
Michael Lynch was on hand to punch in, and while
there may be debate whoever had the last touch, the
green flag was raised as Naomh Colmcille pushed
ahead. They extended their lead with a Lynch 45’ and
a Conor Grant point. Malin stayed in touch with an
Anthony Kelly free midway through the half. Gerard
Curran pointed an awkward looking score maybe off
his weaker foot to keep the visitors four ahead.
Kieron McColgan then swung over a good point for
Malin after good work from the hard working
Christopher McLaughlin. Paul McLaughlin salvaged a
point after Jason Doherty’s goal effort had been
saved and after the ball came back to the 13’.
Daniel Clarke had the last say of the half when he
tapped over a free to leave the half-time score
Malin 0-05 Naomh Colmcille 1-05. Michael Devine
opened the scoring after the break with a lovely
score off the outside of his boot from out on the
right after Conor Grant had done well to tee him up.
Malin then managed to come from four behind to level
with Anthony Kelly hitting over four frees, two of
them won by Paul McLaughlin and two won by
substitute John Gerard McDermott. Ryan McErlane then
scored an impressive point for Naomh Colmcille after
a good run from midfield. Darren McLarkey replied
for the hosts when he scored a nice point with a
left footed effort from the centre 30 yards out.
Kelly, the joint manager along with Terence Coulhoun,
then put Malin ahead with another free, this time
from distance, well outside the 45’. Clarke
responded with a free of his own shortly after when
McErlane had been fouled. Kelly scored his seventh
of the day from around the ‘D’ after the ball was
adjudged to have been touched on the ground. Paul
McLaughlin extended that lead shortly after, when
seemingly out of options, he decided to try his luck
from range and his driven effort crept over the bar.
John Gerard McDermott followed up this good score
with another when he managed to find space on the
left and drove over with his right. Michael Devine
showed again his impressive free taking from the
ground with another long range free to pull one back
but the final whistle went and Malin led 0-14 Naomh
Colmcille 1-09.
