School remembers crash victims
with unique car freshener
15.05.17
A BUNCRANA school is
remembering past pupils who died in road accidents
with an innovative car air freshener bearing an
important safety message.
Transition Year students at Scoil Mhuire, Buncrana,
Co Donegal, have launched a unique angel-shaped air
freshener printed with the words: 'SLOW Down, SAVE
Lives: Remember those who have lost their lives on
our roads'.
The launch on Thursday came just two weeks after the
tragic deaths of friends Nathan Farrell (18) and
Nathan Dixon Gill (17) who had done their Leaving
Certificates at the school last year. |
The teenagers died when
the car they were travelling in crashed near
Quigley's Point as they returned home to Buncrana
after a night out. Three others in the vehicle
survived the smash.
The unique angel fresheners are the brainchild of
Transition Year students led by their teacher Marie
Boyce under the Young Social Innovators programme.
The TY team received sponsorship from two motor
industry firms based in Buncrana (McLaughlin Motor
Factors) and Sligo (Martin Reilly Motors) to have
them produced. All proceeds from the sale of the air
fresheners will go to the National Rehabilitation
Hospital in Dun Laoghaire.
The Buncrana students are now creating a huge buzz
on social media with their €2 products, as people
line up with messages of encouragement and orders to
buy.
The product is on sale at the school and local shops
and the students are being urged to pitch their idea
to TV's Dragons' Den. |

"Brilliant idea. Simple
but oh so effective. I'm heavily into road safety
and this needs to be marketed as much as possible.
Dragons Den maybe? How can I get some?" wrote one
supporter.
"Fantastic (and) so poignant, considering all the
tragedy (our) wee town has experienced over the
years. Congrats to all involved. Great initiative,"
added another.
The school launched the clever product with a
balloon release “to remember all passed pupils who
passed away due to road accidents”.
"We are delighted with the reaction and really hope
to get the message out there. All help would be
greatly appreciated," a spokesperson told Facebook
followers. |
