Danielle’s family “resolute and
strong”
16.07.17
THE family of Danielle
McLaughlin remain "resolute and strong" as they seek
justice for the young backpacker four months after
her murder in India, their solicitor has said.
However, Desmond Doherty said that due to the
"horrific nature" of the crime, he expected the
Indian legal process to be "slow and deliberate".
And he said Danielle's family in Buncrana shortly
expect to receive the results of the second post
mortem, carried out by Irish state pathologist Dr
Marie Cassidy.
He also revealed that witness statements and footage
of “evidential value” were obtained after a global
appeal for information, and these will be presented
to Indian prosecutors.
Danielle's body was found in the Canacona area of
the west India coastal resort on March 14, the day
after she attended Holi celebrations, the Hindu
festival of colours. |
The former student, who
was born in Scotland and raised in Buncrana, set off
on her travels the previous month telling friends
she planned to study yoga and Ayurveda in India.
A 24-year old Goa man is currently in custody
awaiting trial on rape and murder charges.
Derry-based Mr Doherty said the family had received
assistance from both the Irish and British consular
services since the tragic incident.
"The British Consulate have a ‘Murder and
Manslaughter' department who have been of invaluable
assistance to date," he said.
He said he closely monitors "all developments" in
Goa with the assistance of the family's Indian
lawyer Vikram Varma, police and consulate services. |

Meanwhile, friends have
organised two major events in Buncrana to raise
funds for the ongoing 'Truth for Danielle' campaign.
They include a country dance this Thursday, July 20
and a 5K Colour Run/Walk on the afternoon of July
29. The country dance, with David Craig and David
James, will take place at the Plaza (doors open 8pm)
with the colour run beginning at the Shore Front at
1pm.
A #TruthForDanielle wristband campaign is also
underway with colourful bracelets on sale at many
outlets in Buncrana.
Mr Doherty added: "Danielle's family remain resolute
and strong in this difficult time and place their
faith in the rule of law and the ultimate goal of
seeking the truth. Without truth for Danielle there
can be no justice for her mother and family," added
Mr Doherty. For details of the two fundraising
events, click here . |
