Donegal population falls to

THE population of Co
Donegal has fallen by 1.2% to 159,192 in the past
five years, new Census figures show.
The results, published this morning, also show that
Donegal has slightly more female inhabitants than
male, at 80,170 and 79,022 respectively.
Donegal has a total of 58,505 households, the
figures show.
Some 7,341 people were divorced or separated in
Donegal in the last five years.
This is a rate of 4.6% compared to the national
average of 4.7%, the Census data reveals.
The average age in Donegal is now 38.5 years,
compared to 36.7 in 2011.
Nationally, the average age is 37.4, up from 36.1
years five years ago.
The figures show that Ireland’s population now
stands at 4,761,865 people - an increase of 173,613
since April 2011.
They also reveal a growing ageing population with
the number of males over 65 increasing by 22% to
296,837 and the number of females over 65 increasing
by 16.7% to 340,730.
The total number of non-nationals has fallen
slightly to 535,475, or 11.6% of the population.
This is the first decline since the introduction of
this question in 2002.
Census 2016 Summary Results Part I was published
today by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The
number crunchers have been collating the data since
it was collected on April 24, 2016 by 4,663
enumerators across the State.
CSO senior statician Deirdre Cullen said the new
data would provide a "comprehensive demographic and
socio-economic profile of Ireland in April 2016".
Some other Donegal findings:
56,738 say they can speak Irish - a drop of more
than 2,000 since 2011.
586 Travellers reside in Donegal - a drop of nearly
20%.
14,561 dwellings have no internet access - a drop of
over a quarter. |
