GAA skipper gives boxing club a
fighting chance
06.09.17
DONEGAL GAA captain
Michael Murphy is helping a flood-hit boxing club
get fighting fit again after donating the full stock
of exercise mats from his sports shop.
The top footballer was moved by the plight of Dunree
Boxing Club which lost everything in the
catastrophic floods that swept through Buncrana on
the night of August 22.
The club which is home to more than 40 members aged
seven to fifteen years, has been receiving lots of
help and support locally and from around the country
after its premises, all its gym equipment, sparring
gear, mats, fixtures and fittings were wiped out
when the nearby Crana River burst its banks. |

Dunree Boxing Club in Buncrana was
completely destroyed by the flooding on August 22nd,
2017. |
The club thanked the
Donegal captain and his Letterkenny store, with a
social media post including mock-up photo of the
sporting hero in a Superman cape.
"Big thanks to @michaelmurphysports for supplying
the club with his full stock of top class exercise
mats. Some heroes do wear capes!" the club said.
The club also thanked fellow boxing clubs in Donegal
and Derry for donating funds as well as gloves,
sparring pads and exercise equipment.
Meanwhile, at the Government’s request, the Irish
Red Cross will administer two temporary humanitarian
schemes for small businesses with up to 20 employees
as well as voluntary and sporting groups affected by
the once-in-a-century weather event.
The two schemes will provide a contribution to cover
flood-damage to buildings, contents, fixture and
fittings. Closing date for applications is September
30, 2017. |
