DONEGAL martial arts
grand master Josie Murray will be honoured at a
special reception hosted by Donegal County Council
next week.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Terence Slowey will host the
event in recognition of the Donegal man's
"outstanding achievements" and contribution to
martial arts at home and abroad.
The Burtonport native has represented Donegal and
Ireland at the highest level and has won nine world
gold medals, four silver medals and one bronze medal
in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 2001 to 2016”.
He also travels the world giving seminars while
teaching his own style of Jiu-Jitsu called Empty
Force Jiu-Jitsu. |
The Keadue man, who
runs a pub in Letterkenny, started his training with
Josie Kyles in Atemi Jiu-Jitsu. He then went to
England and trained with the British Jiu-Jitsu
Governing Body before quickly receiving his First
Dan Black Belt under Richard Morris 10th Dan.
Back home, he founded the Donegal Jiu-Jitsu
Federation and Donegal Cobra Kai Kickboxing Club.
The first Irish Cup was held 20 years ago and he won
it five times.
The three-time Donegal Sports Star winner is known
around the world for his dedication to his art and
he has appeared on the front cover of seven martial
arts magazines. Many students and teachers from
across the world travel to train with him every
year. |

He was voted top
teacher within the United Nations of Jiu-Jitsu for
16 years and was the first Donegal man to be
inducted into the 14th Annual USA International
Black Belt Hall of Fame.
He currently runs his own club in Letterkenny and
Derry and also teaches children with autism and
other disabilities, while raising funds for many
charities.
The special reception will take place in Dungloe
Public Service Centre on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at
4pm.
