giveaway event in Carndonagh tomorow, Wednesday 29th July 2026, to
coincide with National Food Waste Recycling Week.
The national campaign, led by MyWaste, aims to raise
awareness of the importance of recycling food waste and

waste is a simple but effective climate action, helping
to divert waste from landfill and transform it into
valuable resources such as compost and renewable energy. |

The free compost giveaway
event will be held on Wednesday 29th July 2026, from
10am to 12pm at the Carndonagh Recycling Centre on
Station Road.
Members of the public are invited to attend and collect
free compost, while stocks last. Staff will also be on
site to provide advice on food waste recycling and a
number of food waste recycling starter packs will be
available.
This year's campaign focuses on improving the quality
and quantity of food waste recycling and thereby
reducing contamination in the food waste bin. Households
are encouraged to keep ‘bin intruders’ such as plastic
packaging, glass and metal out of their brown bins. This
helps to prevent contamination at the compost and
anaerobic digestion facilities leading to higher quality
material for recycling. The campaign also encourages
residents to present their brown bins regularly for
collection and promote the use of certified compostable
liners, highlighting the importance of using appropriate
food waste bags to prevent plastics entering the food
waste stream. |
