Altar wine stolen from priest 11.11.10

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

THIEVES targeted the car of a local priest before making off with a quantity of altar wine and a satellite navigation system.
Newtown parish priest Fr Seamus Gallagher was at a meeting in the youth club last Thursday evening when the raiders struck between 7.30pm and 9.30pm. The local cleric’s car was not locked at the time.
Fr Gallagher, who has proved popular with Newtown parishioners since taking over as Parish Priest from Fr Kevin O’Doherty last year, said he was disappointed by what happened.
“I think it was just a couple of opportunists who saw their chance. It was my own fault I suppose because I forgot to lock the car. It was a disappointing thing to happen. They got away with my sat-nav system and some altar wine as I had my Mass kit in the car with me,” he said.
The Newtown parish priest said he didn’t want to see the reputation of the area’s young people tarnished by a tiny minority.
“I have had an overwhelmingly positive experience with the all the young people since I came here and I wouldn’t like the actions of a small minority to undermine all the good work done in the Newtown area.”
“The vast majority of the young people in the parish are decent good people and it would be a pity for a few thieves to give everyone else a bad name. There is a lot of good work which goes on here that isn’t reported. We have had very little problem with anti-social behaviour here,” he added.

A Garda spokesman said he was appealing for witnesses to come forward. He said it was impossible to tell if the thieves were local or if they happened to be driving by. He urged members of the public to make sure that their vehicles are properly locked at all times. Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact Newtown Garda Station on 07491 67100 or 07491 56113.
