Vandals chop Buncrana trees 13.01.10

by Damian Dowds, Inishowen Independent

A Buncrana Town Council official has blasted mindless louts who chopped down mature trees in Castle Park over the weekend.
The damage came to light on Monday when town gardener George McDermott was alerted to the destruction of two mature trees.
“We have had drunken fools causing damage to property in the past, but this is of a different nature altogether,” said town engineer Donal Walker. “The perpetrator or perpatrators took something like a hatchet to the trees and must have spent considerable time and energy in chopping them down.
“It was nothing short of pure, premeditated vandalism,” he said.
“Town gardener George McDermott and his staff are regularly praised for the work they do on maintaining green areas and the general aspect of the town,” Mr Walker continued. “They take great pride in their work and are rightly praised for it, but to see something like this happening is demoralising. It goes against everything that we are trying to achieve.”
Mr Walker estimated the cost of replacing that trees, planted some five years ago, at €1,000 each.
“They were large girth trees that had enhanced Castle Park and to replace them now will be very expensive.”
The Council have asked for anyone with information to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 9320540.
