Supreme Court appeal "a disgrace" 05.11.10

SENATOR Pearse Doherty has welcomed the setting of the Donegal South West by-election date for November 25 but branded "a disgrace" the Government's decision to appeal this week's High Court ruling to the Supreme Court.
Senator Doherty said: "It is an outrage that following the President of the High Court Judge Nicholas Kearn’s clear ruling, that this Government would have the audacity to challenge the recommendations of that ruling.
"The Government should accept the court’s judgement and proceed accordingly.
The decision to take the case to the Supreme Court will cost additional expense to the taxpayer in the Government’s attempt to obstruct the democratic rights of the people in Dublin South West, Waterford and Donegal North East. Let’s call a spade a spade. This move is about keeping the present government in power."
Taoiseach Brian Cowen yesterday said the appeal to the Supreme Court was to have a point of law clarified.

November 25 falls on a Thursday and Senator Doherty said that date would "discommode" many students studying away from home and those who are working outside of Donegal.
"Given that, I would urge people to get registered as soon as possible. The election is only three weeks away. In order that we get the best possible turnout on the day, all those who want to change the pattern of politics in this country and have their voice heard via the polling stations should waste no time in registering."

**In a statement from Fianna Fáil yesterday, the party said the selection convention for the Donegal South West by-election will take place this Sunday, November 7 at 6pm in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties. Fianna Fáil said letters had been issued to all of the party's 100+ cumainn within the constituency and nominations would close on Saturday.
