Group pushes for courthouse refit 06.12.10

CARNDONAGH Community and Rural Development Company has welcomed the reopening of the local courthouse after a 30-month absence but says it will push for a full refurbishment of the building.
The group said they were happy their campaign had been successful and they thanked the Department of Justice and the Courts Service for "taking on board the arguments put forward and finally making the correct decision".
They also thanked local politicians and local solicitors who supported them on the issue.
Carndonagh Courthouse.
They said they felt their case had been endorsed by Judge Seamus Hughes in his remarks to the court on reopening day.
"The judge spoke of the importance of the local courthouse to rural communities such as North Inishowen and the effect on business and the socio-economic life of the region.
"Carndonagh Development are, however, disappointed at the level of refurbishment done to the courthouse and our dissatisfaction was put directly to the Minister responsible, Martin Mansergh, at our recent meeting in Buncrana.
"Minister Mansergh visited the courthouse and saw for himself that much work remains to be done. While stating that finding the finance to complete the project is currently difficult the Minister did indicate that the remaining work could be done over a period of time.
"Carndonagh Development will therefore continue to press the OPW and the Courts Service to have the inadequacies addressed as soon as possible."
