Carn's budding young director 26.08.10

Movie maker Marie sets sights on film-making

A CARNDONAGH teenager got the chance of a lifetime recently when she was picked for a place at an international film school.
Marie Matthews, 18, from Cedar Grove in Carn, was among a small group of 20 from both sides of the Atlantic, who were chosen for a place in the week-long Cinemagic Film School in Belfast.
The other students were from Los Angeles, New York, Dublin and Belfast.
Marie heard about Cinemagic when they were in the peninsula promoting the locally-shot film 'A Shine of Rainbows' starring Aidan Quinn. She went on their website and filled in an application form to take part.
"I was very lucky and I really appreciated getting one of the places. It was the best experience of my life," she beamed.

Under the guidance of top movie industry professionals, the young people, all aged between 15 and 18, came together at the Crescent Arts Centre in Belfast, to write and create their own short film.
Their 8-minute short 'Gone' was shown on UTV on Tuesday night and will also feature at upcoming Cinemagic festivals in Belfast, Dublin, New York, Los Angeles, Boston and San Francisco. Marie was visual director on the film.
Marie, who is the daughter of Maeve and Kevin Matthews and has three sisters, said she made a lot of friends during the event.
The group were officially welcomed to the city by Belfast City Council’s development committee chairman, Cllr Conor Maskey, who said: “Cinemagic truly is one of Belfast’s success stories. By embracing the magic of film, television and digital technologies to educate, motivate and inspire young people, Cinemagic has developed a worldwide reputation for excellence and is currently the largest event of its kind for young people on these islands."
Meanwhile, Marie, who is going into fifth year at Carndonagh Community School and is a huge fan of Colin Farrell, now has her sights set on studying film and drama at university. "I originally wanted to do acting but after doing the visual directing during the film school, I might want to do that instead," she added.
