Chic-Hens makes awards short list 16.02.10

BURT-based Chic-Hens has been selected as a finalist in this year’s Enterprising Donegal Business Awards.
The hen house company, set up by Shane Houston, is one of 13 finalists competing this year for the top honours.
Shane designed and created miniature models for architects for 20 years including the zenith of the construction boom. However, when the downturn badly hit the architectural sector, Shane changed direction and established Chic-Hens in October 2008. The company builds a range of brightly-coloured, handmade wooden hen-houses and hen-runs to make keeping chickens fun and easy. Shane also supplies hens and provides advice on how to care for them. He also makes pet houses, bird houses, feeding tables and bat boxes.
“I am really, really pleased to be nominated as a finalist," said Shane. “I love what I do and to get public recognition for our work as well is fantastic.”
Last summer, Shane featured in the RTE series Higher Ground which followed the progress of eight budding rural entrepreneurs. He has exhibited at the Bloom Flower Show in the Phoenix Park, Dublin and the National Crafts & Design Fair at the RDS.
Winners of the Enterprising Donegal Business Awards will be announced at a black tie gala dinner at Solis Lough Eske Hotel on March 12.

Donegal Enterprise Board ceo, Michael Tunney added: “The Enterprising Donegal Business Awards highlight success stories among small businesses in Donegal. We hope Shane and others like him inspire people around the county to start up their own businesses and take advantage of the services the Board can offer.”
