Big send off for Culture bid 21.05.10

THE final bid document that will determine whether or not Derry will be named UK City of Culture 2013 left the city yesterday with goodwill messages from local school children and young people who gave it their full backing.
As An Taoiseach Brian Cowen gave his support to the bid, Derry's temporary director of development, Oonagh McGillion left for Manchester to officially submit the bid.
“We have been overwhelmed by the level of goodwill shown towards the bid and we firmly believe we have the winning bid. On behalf of the bid team and everyone involved I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their support," she said.
Local school children and members of the team joined the Mayor for a resounding 'Just Say Yes!' This follows on from the Cultural Connections reception at the Millennium Forum on Wednesday attended by US Envoy to Northern Ireland, Declan Kelly and the Mayor, Cllr Paul Fleming.
US Envoy Declan Kelly said: “Derry and the entire region of Northern Ireland possess a

great deal of cultural capital and creative talent. A winning bid would create an immense opportunity for the region to further develop its strong cultural base."
Meanwhile, Mr Cowen said Derry and its hinterland had "a rich and varied cultural history".
"In troubled times, the city demonstrated a real spirit and a drive to overcome adversity.
That spirit has been harnessed by the entire community in supporting the City of Culture bid.
“If the bid is successful, Derry and the wider North West region will have a golden opportunity to showcase the vibrancy of its cultural life, and its enduring warmth and vitality, to a huge audience - not just in these islands but around the world.
“I have no doubt that Derry would prove itself an extremely worthy winner. I wish the bid team, and the people of the city, all the best."
