Golfers boost diabetes research
05.07.10
THE Western Health and
Social Care Trust has been presented with €1,500 by
the North West Golf Club in Buncrana to support
ongoing research into diabetes.
The money was raised through a golf tournament
organised by the club's lady captain, Anne O’Neill.
Each year the new lady captain chooses a charity to
support and a golf competition is held to help raise
funds. Anne explained: “This year I nominated
diabetes research as I developed gestational
diabetes almost 20 years ago and have been insulin
dependent for 16 years. For me it is important that
the monies be utilised locally to help improve the
prospects of the increasing numbers of diabetic
patients in the Western area.” |

The cheque was
presented to Dr Maurice O’Kane, head of research and
development with the Western Trust. He added: “I am
delighted to accept the cheque on behalf of the
Research and Development Office of the Western
Trust. This is a huge boost for our ongoing research
into diabetes. Such support allows our researchers
to have a positive impact for patients across the
Western Trust area and boosts our efforts to combat
diabetes and develop research opportunities from
‘bench to bedside.’”
Dr John Lindsay, consultant physician in diabetes
and endocrinology thanked the golf club, event
organisers, participants and everyone who provided
sponsorship. The winning team on the day comprised,
Joanne Harkin, Donna Marie McLaughlin and Sheila
Reid (NWGC); first man: Eddie McKeever (NWGC); and
par three challenge: Anne O'Neill. |
