A MAN suspected of
being a member of a dissident republican
organisation was arrested yesterday in a dawn swoop
in Buncrana.
The suspect was arrested following searches of two
houses in the Buncrana area on Sunday night and
around 6am yesterday.
He was taken to Buncrana Garda Station where he was
detained and questioned under Section 30 of the
Offences Against the State Act 1939. He can be held
for an initial period of 24 hours or a further 24
hours, on direction of a chief superintendent.
The suspect arrested in Buncrana was among five men,
aged between 40 and 60 years, who were detained
yesterday following an intelligence-led operation in
Donegal North East.
The arrests were part of an ongoing investigation
into the activities of dissident republicans.
The operation began on Sunday when a Mercedes car
was stopped at a checkpoint in the Oldtown area of
Letterkenny.
Garda sources say a number of balaclavas and cable
ties were found in the vehicle. The items and the
car were seized and taken for technical examination.
Four of the suspects were arrested in Letterkenny
shortly after midnight yesterday. Two of them were
detained in Letterkenny and two were detained in
Milford. |
