STUDENTS are being
urged to party 'with style' as they collect their
Junior Certificate results this week.
The North West Alcohol Forum (NWAF) said celebrating
'with style' recognised that "there is nothing
stylish in being sick, lying in a pool of vomit,
being assaulted or waking up in the emergency
department".
NWAF director, Eamon O'Kane, urged young people not
to put themselves at risk of harm from using alcohol
or drugs to enhance their celebrations.
“We recognise that the majority of our young people
are very sensible and responsible in their lifestyle
choices," said Mr O'Kane.
"Unfortunately, however, evidence shows that there
will be a number of young people who will turn to
alcohol or drugs as part of their celebration
activities. This can often lead to increased risks
of harm and illness and in some instances
recollections of the celebration that are memorable
for the wrong reasons.”
The NWAF works in partnership with all sectors of
the community in counties Donegal, Sligo and
Leitrim, to reduce harmful drinking and its
consequences to the individual, the family and
society.
Mr O'Kane said the charity did not want to 'spoil
the party' for students who had worked hard to
achieve their results. However, he said by partying
sensibly, students could have a fun night out that
they would remember.
“By partying ‘with style’ those Junior Cert students
who do gather with their friends to celebrate, can
be assured of a fun night that will provide positive
memories and a much-deserved break from their hard
work,” he said.
The NWAF urged anyone looking for guidance on the
issue of alcohol at this time, should visit the HSE
