Council investigates Buncrana dumping 04.02.10

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

ILLEGAL dumpers have strewn household rubbish over a scenic woodland habitat in Buncrana.
The area at Millfield in the town has been littered with tens of bags of ‘disgusting’ domestic waste. The same site was targeted by dumpers last summer.
Chairperson of the Buncrana Environmental Group, Brendan McLaughlin, said he was ‘outraged’ at the illegal dumping.
“This is absolutely disgusting. It undermines all the good work that people have carried out in cleaning up the Buncrana area recently,” he said.
“This rubbish pollutes a beautiful woodland area and could lead to an infestation of rats. It has got to stop immediately.”
McLaughlin said the local environmental association were seeking prosecutions after the incident.
“We want bigger fines for this type of behaviour. There has been systematic dumping on this site and we are calling on the Council to install CCTV to catch the culprits,” he said.

The Buncrana man said he was sure those involved in the illegal dumping were local.
“These people clearly know the area and they are coming in under the cover of darkness to dump months worth of household rubbish,” he said.
“We’ve alerted the Donegal County Council litter warden and we hope to bring about prosecutions in this case.”
McLaughlin said that illegal dumping was ruining the image of Buncrana, a town that depends on tourism.
He urged anyone in the Millfield area of Buncrana who had witnessed any suspicious behaviour to contact the litter warden in Carndonagh immediately. Donegal County Council said they were currently investigating the incident.
