THIRTY-FIVE imitation firearms and a number of
plasma TVs were stolen in what Gardaí are treating
as linked burglaries in the Newtowncunningham and
Killea areas on Sunday night Monday morning.
Superintendent Vincent O’Brien from Letterkenny
Gardaí has appealed to the public to contact them if
they have any information about either incident.
The first incident occurred sometime between 2am and
3am on Monday, August 23. Several men smashed the
glass door at Donegal Air Soft Rifle and Archery
Range at Monfad in Newtown.
They took the imitation weapons, which are powered
by gas canisters and fire pellets. Supt O’Brien said
while the weapons aren’t lethal, they are realistic
looking and could be used in hold-ups.
Gardaí want anyone who was in the area at the time
and saw anyone or any vehicle acting in a suspicious
manner to contact them at Newtowncunningham.
The second incident occurred at 6am on Monday
morning when, in a similar manner, burglars smashed
a glass door in Powerworld at Killea. A number of
men entered the building and took a number of flat
screen plasma TVs.
Superintendent O’Brien said that Gardaí are treating
this burglary and the earlier one in Newtown as
linked.
Again they have appealed to the public to contact
Gardaí at Carrigans if they noticed anything
suspicious in the area at the time.
Meanwhile Gardaí in Letterkenny have also confirmed
that they arrested and questioned two men in
relation to an attempted robbery in
Newtowncunningham earlier this month.
The Gardaí said that on August 12, at around 10pm,
two men entered the Newtown City Chinese restaurant.
One man was wearing a balaclava and the other
wearing a hoodie. One of the men was wielding an
imitation firearm. The owner challenged the two men
who left the premises empty-handed.
On August 20, Gardaí carried out a number of
searches in the Newtowncunningham area and recovered
an imitation firearm.
Two men were arrested and taken to Letterkenny Garda
Station where they were questioned for a period of
12 hours before being released pending a file being
sent to the DPP. |
