A MAJOR milestone was reached in the peninsula
yesterday when Coláiste Chineál Eoghain celebrated
its first ever Junior Certificate results.
Nine pupils picked up their certificates at the
Buncrana school - Inishowen's only Irish-medium
secondary school. Principal Éabha Ní Mhonacháin said
everyone who was involved with the gaelcholaiste,
from its beginnings, was "proud and delighted" with
the important achievement.
"This is a great day for all of us - pupils, parents
and staff. It is a great milestone in our history,"
said Ms Ní Mhonacháin.
Coláiste Chineál Eoghain opened its doors in
September 2007 with ten pupils in its first year.
The school currently has an enrolment of 35
students. |

Ms Ní Mhonacháin said she was very happy with the
standard achieved by the nine Junior Cert pupils,
who were among 2,200 young people collecting results
in the county yesterday.
"We had some excellent individual results but all
children achieved and reached their potential and
that is very important as this is their first major
academic test in life. They now have a good basis to
build on, for their Leaving Certificate.
Ms Ní Mhonacháin and staff reflected yesterday on
the young school's steady development. "We started
off with ten pupils, ten tables and chairs and five
members of staff. We are pleased and proud that we
have progressed and achieved so much in those three
years." She said they were particularly delighted
with one boy who came to the school after attending
an English-medium primary school. "His results were
very good particularly considering that he had no
Irish when he arrived at the school. It just shows
that Irish immersion is achievable and very
successful," added the principal.
Meanwhile, yesterday's celebrations for the Coláiste
Chineál Eoghain Junior Cert Class of 2010 included a
special lunch and that all-important half-day. |
