Robert’s body found 24.11.10

by Linda McGrory

THE body of a man discovered washed up on a beach in Malin Head today is that of Robert ‘Jackie’ McLaughlin who has been missing since a fishing accident on November 1.
The tragic discovery was made shortly before 10.30am by a man out walking the beach in a cove at Killourt, Malin Head.
Mr McLaughlin, a 41-year old single man from Ross Head, Glengad, went missing following an accident that claimed the life of his uncle Eddie ‘Liza’ Doherty, 65. The two were fishing lobster when Eddie’s boat ‘Jennifer’ got into difficulties and capsized off Glengad Head.
The late Robert McLaughlin, left, and his uncle, the late Eddie Doherty.
The body of Mr Doherty was recovered quickly but despite an intensive air and sea search, his nephew remained missing.
His body was recovered this morning less than eight kilometres north west of the accident scene. Flanked by two of his heartbroken brothers, his remains were removed from the scene to Letterkenny Hospital where a post mortem is due to take place later today.
Eddie Doherty’s son-in-law, Martin McDermott, thanked everyone for tirelessly helping in the search.
“The people around here never gave up hope and kept on searching.”
“This is a big relief that Robert’s body has been got and hopefully now when we bury Robert, both families can start to put their lives back together.”
The Coast Guard search for the fisherman’s remains was officially scaled back on Sunday after a 21-day operation.
