THE Good Morning Donegal service in Buncrana said it
is heartened by the strong community spirit shown
around the county during the recent weather crisis.
The service telephones older and vulnerable people
in their own homes on a daily basis or times that
best suit the client. Its co-ordinators said
kindness and neighbourliness abounded in the
peninsula and other parts of the county, as sub-zero
temperatures confined many to their homes. Good
Morning Donegal project co-ordinator Frances Browne
said all 246 people on their call list reported
enough fuel, food and medicines throughout the
recent crisis. This was thanks to the help of good
neighbours, family and friends, she said. And while
there has been a recent thaw in the icy weather
conditions, Ms Browne said nobody was certain
whether the thaw would be lasting or short-lived.
"It was great to hear that everyone on our call list
were getting help from friends, family and
neighbours. But I don't think we're over the worst
of it just yet and I would just urge everyone to
keep up the good work especially if conditions
worsen," said Ms Browne. She said some clients were
still reporting problems with icy and slippery
pavements while others were fearful of a long, cold
winter ahead. "We're really just at the start of the
season and the fear out there is that we might be in
for a long, hard winter." Meanwhile, Ms Browne said
the service's hard-working volunteers would continue
to keep in regular contact with clients as winter
