Film nomination for Henry Girls
14.01.10
MALIN band The Henry
Girls have been nominated for an Irish Film and
Television Award (IFTA) for their contribution to
the score of the film 'A Shine of Rainbows'. The
movie, starring Hollywood favourites Aidan Quinn and
Connie Neilsen, was shot on location around the
peninsula last summer. The Henry Girls - sisters
Karen, Lorna and Joleen (Henry) McLaughlin - have
been nominated for an IFTA in the Best Original
Score category. They will be up against talents such
as Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy when the curtain
goes up on the IFTA ceremony in Dublin on February
20.
Joleen, who sings and plays harp with the band, said
the three were thrilled with the nomination. |

“We were delighted when
we heard the news, as we didn’t expect to be
nominated," she said. Her sister Karen, who sings
and plays fiddle, said the group felt “truly
honoured to be selected alongside other composers of
such a high calibre in this category".
Meanwhile, Lorna who provides vocals, accordion and
whistle, said their involvement in the score for 'A
Shine of Rainbows' meant a lot to the group.
“The producers came to a few of our traditional
sessions here in Inishowen and were really impressed
with our music so asked us to get involved. They
felt our music captured perfectly what the movie is
trying to portray," said Lorna.
The Henry Girls were asked to compose original music
for the score and to collaborate with Keith Power,
the Canadian-born, LA-based composer for the film.
“It was an honour to work with a truly gifted
composer like Keith. Without his guidance and
endless positivity we wouldn’t have been able to do
what we did for the film - we learned a great deal
from him," added Lorna.
The film score features The Henry Girls’ original
song 'Early in the Morning' sung by actress Connie
Nielsen, who plays Maire, the adoptive mother of
Tomas around whom the story revolves. The song, this
time sung by Lorna, is also played in the rolling
credits at the end of the film. The Henry Girls
perform other original pieces for the score and play
on several of the film tracks written by Keith
Power. |
